The objective of project WIDER is the support of active and independent living for the elderly, in ecologically smart houses. The project is implemented in the framework of MEDITERRANEAN PROGRAMME OF TRANSNATIONAL COOPERATION (MED).
Europe's population is aging; the number of people over 65 is increasing, leading to many social changes and challenges which require appropriate solutions. One such solution is offered by the WIDER project aiming to strengthen innovation, expertise and networking of small and medium enterprises ( SMEs) in seven regional industrial areas of the Mediterranean area, in order to introduce their energy- efficiency products all along the supply chain of "ecologically smart homes" (eco – smart housing) addressed to elderly. It involves companies active in automation industries, building materials, electrical & plumbing, air conditioning and heating, residential design and construction, security systems, production of electrical appliances, home appliances , IT and telecommunications, etc

Through seven regional pilot projects, selected SMEs, belonging to the above mentioned sectors, will have the opportunity to increase the value of their products and / or promote new products of improved energy efficiency in broader market segments, aiming at serving the needs of an aging population that wants to live independently, to maintain and if possible improve their standard of living.
In Greece, the project is implemented by the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving (CRES), in cooperation with local and regional bodies, universities, companies and organizations from six other Mediterranean countries (France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Slovenia, Bosnia –Herzegovina).
